The tiny French village with a big rallycross heart

Next year is a significant one for France’s legendary Circuit de Lohéac. Not only will it celebrate the 50th anniversary of what has become one of the biggest rallycross events in the world, it will also stage a round of the European Championship for the first time in five years – with the promise of a ‘real rallycross festival for everyone’.

It was in the small Breton village just south of Rennes that France’s very first rallycross meeting took place back in 1976, and fans immediately voted with their feet by turning up in droves. Around a thousand spectators were expected, but more than ten thousand turned up. The tone was set.

Over the intervening half-century, Lohéac has unquestionably established itself as a staple of the popular dual-surface discipline, regularly attracting capacity grids and knowledgeable and passionate crowds of 70,000 or more.

On 29-30 August, 2026, the cradle of French rallycross will play host to the penultimate round of the Euro RX1 and Euro RX3 campaigns, marking a keenly-anticipated return to the international spotlight for the first time since 2021 as Lohéac prepares to write a new page in its remarkable five-decade history.

“It is a great source of pride to welcome the European Championship back to Lohéac in the year of our 50th anniversary,” acknowledged Patrick Germain, President of the event’s Organising Committee. “We are convinced that it is a series that once again has real potential for the future and are well aware that a healthy FIA championship is essential to the continued development and success of our domestic rallycross scene.

“Our aim is for the weekend to be a real rallycross festival for everyone – from competitors to volunteers and spectators. It is in this spirit that we have decided not to increase ticket prices, as a way of thanking fans for their loyalty. I have no doubt that they will enjoy a fantastic and memorable event.”

“We are delighted that the FIA European Rallycross Championship will return to Lohéac after a five-year absence,” echoed FIA Road Sport Director, Emilia Abel. “This historic circuit has a rich heritage and remains one of the most iconic venues for competitors and fans alike.

“We are grateful to the French rallycross community for their continued support and eagerly await an exceptional field of drivers and enthusiastic spectators next August.”
